Character Counter

Paste your text and count characters, letters, numbers, spaces and lines in real time — plus how many times a comma, a letter, or any string you choose shows up.

Local processing: your text is processed in your browser and never uploaded to Numelto.

Type or paste text above to see the stats.

Type one character, string or word per line — don't separate them with commas, since a comma itself may be one of the patterns you want to count.

Add at least one line to count occurrences.

What each stat counts

Total characters: every literal character in the text, including spaces, line breaks and symbols — nothing is trimmed or normalized. Without spaces: the same, minus spaces and line breaks. Letters: letters only (accents included). Numbers: digits 0-9 only. Words and lines are counted the same way as in the word counter.

Counting a character or string

Type any letter, symbol, word or string (one per line) and see exactly how many times it appears in your text — no regular expressions, it's a literal character-by-character search. Useful for counting commas in a CSV, how often a keyword repeats, or how many times a specific character shows up before processing a file.

Case sensitivity and overlapping matches

By default the count is case sensitive ("E" and "e" are counted separately) and non-overlapping (in "aaa", searching for "aa" gives 1, not 2). Turn either option off if your case needs it.

Character frequency

An optional table (you can show or hide it) listing every distinct character in the text, how many times it appears, and what percentage it represents — sorted from most to least frequent. Spaces, tabs and line breaks are shown with a label ("[space]", "[tab]"...) so they never stay invisible in the table.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. The text is never sent to Numelto, not even to measure how the tool is used.

How this differs from the word counter

The word counter focuses on words, sentences, paragraphs and reading time. This tool focuses on literal characters and counting specific occurrences (commas, letters, symbols, strings) — use both together if you need each kind of count.
