Appliance Power Consumption Calculator
Calculate how much energy an appliance or electrical device uses and how much it costs you, based on its power, hours of use, and the electricity price.
How is it calculated?
Energy (kWh) = (power in W ÷ 1000) × hours of use per day × number of days. Cost = energy (kWh) × your contracted price per kWh.
Examples
100 W appliance, 5 hours a day for 30 days, at 0.15 per kWh
Uses 15 kWh and costs 2.25.
2,000 W appliance, 3 hours a day for 30 days, at 0.18 per kWh
Uses 180 kWh and costs 32.40.
How to calculate how much an appliance consumes
Energy in kWh is the power in watts divided by 1,000, times the hours of use; multiplied by the price per kWh gives the cost. A 100 W appliance running 5 hours a day for 30 days uses 15 kWh.
Appliances with a thermostat don't draw their maximum power all the time: use the equivalent running hours. If you want to know how many amps an appliance draws, use the electrical power calculator; for air conditioning, the air conditioner calculator.
| Appliance | Typical power |
|---|---|
| LED bulb | 5–15 W |
| TV | 50–150 W |
| Desktop computer | 100–300 W |
| Washing machine (heating cycle) | 1,500–2,500 W |
| Electric oven | 2,000–3,000 W |
