Watts to Amps Calculator
Calculate how many amps an electrical device draws based on its power in watts and the installation's voltage. Useful for checking whether an outlet or circuit can handle an appliance.
How is it calculated?
By Watt's law, power (W) = voltage (V) × current (A). Solving for current: I = P ÷ V. Use your installation's voltage: 220–230 V in Europe and much of South America, 110–127 V in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and Colombia, among others.
Examples
2,000 W appliance at 230 V
Draws about 8.7 A.
3,500 W appliance at 230 V
Draws about 15.22 A.
Voltage by country
Always check your installation's voltage and the appliance's nameplate. With lower voltage, the same appliance draws more amps: 2,000 W is 8.7 A at 230 V and 16.7 A at 120 V. To find out how much that consumption costs, use the appliance power consumption calculator.
| Typical voltage | Example countries |
|---|---|
| 220–240 V | Most of Europe, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay |
| 110–127 V | Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Central America, Dominican Republic, United States |
