Air Conditioner Power Consumption Calculator

Calculate how much it will cost you to run your air conditioner for an entire season (for example, a whole summer), based on its power draw, daily hours of use, and the electricity price.

For example, 90 days for a whole summer.

How is it calculated?

Energy (kWh) = (power draw in W ÷ 1000) × hours of use per day × days in the season. Cost = energy (kWh) × price per kWh. Use the unit's electrical power draw (energy label or spec sheet), not its cooling capacity in BTU.

Examples

  • 1,000 W, 6 hours a day for 90 summer days, at 0.15 per kWh

Uses 540 kWh for the season and costs 81.

  • 1,500 W, 4 hours a day for 60 days, at 0.16 per kWh

Uses 360 kWh for the season and costs 57.60.

How to lower consumption without turning off the AC

Raising the set temperature by 1-2°C (24-25°C instead of 22°C) noticeably reduces consumption without losing much comfort. Closing blinds during peak sun hours and using a timer to avoid leaving it on longer than needed also help. To find out how much power you actually need for a new installation, check the electrical power calculator.
