Pool Filtration Time Calculator

Calculate how many hours a day you should run your pool's pump, using the most common rule of thumb: water temperature divided by two.

How is it calculated?

Recommended filtration hours = water temperature (°C) ÷ 2. It's a widely used rule of thumb in pool maintenance, not an exact physical formula — the warmer the water, the more algae and bacteria proliferate, and the more filtration hours are worth applying. Also check your filtration equipment's manual.

Examples

  • Water at 24°C

About 12 hours of filtration a day are recommended.

  • Water at 30°C

About 15 hours of filtration a day are recommended.

The rule of thumb and its limits

Filtration hours are the water temperature divided by 2: at 24°C, about 12 hours. It's a guideline for residential pools; if the water stays cloudy, increase the time. To find out how much that running time costs, use the pool pump power consumption calculator.
