Square Meters Calculator
Calculate the square meters of a room or rectangular surface from its length and width. It's the starting point for figuring out how much paint, tile, or flooring you need.
How is it calculated?
Area = length × width.
Examples
A 5 × 4 meter room
The area is 20 m².
A 6 × 1.2 meter hallway
The area is 7.2 m².
How to calculate square meters
The area of a rectangle is length × width. A 5 × 4 meter room is 20 m².
Always measure both dimensions in the same unit (meters). If you have centimeters, divide by 100 before multiplying.
Multiple rooms and irregular shapes
- Several rooms: calculate each one separately and add up the results.
- L-shaped or irregular shapes: split them into rectangles, calculate each one, and add (or subtract the gap).
- Walls: length × height of each wall; subtract doors and windows if you're painting.
From square meters to material
Square meters are the first step toward buying material. Add a waste margin (typically 5% to 10%, more if the flooring or tile has diagonals or a pattern). Then calculate how much paint, tile, or flooring you need.
