Flooring Calculator
Calculate how many boxes of laminate, vinyl, or hardwood flooring you need based on the surface, each box's coverage, and a waste margin.
How is it calculated?
Boxes needed = (surface to cover × (1 + waste %)) ÷ m² covered by each box, rounded up. The coverage per box is listed by the manufacturer on the packaging or the product's spec sheet.
Examples
30 m² with boxes covering 2.2 m² and 10% waste
You need 15 boxes.
18 m² with boxes covering 1.8 m² and 10% waste
You need 11 boxes.
How many boxes of flooring to buy
Boxes = surface × (1 + waste) ÷ m² per box, rounded up. For 30 m² with 2.2 m² boxes and 10% waste, that's 15 boxes.
Always buy an extra box from the same batch for future repairs. Measure the surface first with the square meters calculator. If you're tiling, use the tile calculator.
| Situation | Recommended waste margin |
|---|---|
| Rectangular room, straight layout | 5–10% |
| Many nooks or hallways | 10–15% |
| Diagonal or herringbone layout | 15–20% |
Why leave a waste margin when buying flooring
The margin covers the cuts at the end of each row and around irregular openings (doors, radiators, columns). 5-8% is usually enough in simple rectangular rooms; raise it to 10-12% if the room has many angles or you're laying the flooring diagonally, which produces more offcuts than a straight layout.
