Colombia 4x1000 Tax Calculator
Colombia · TaxesCalculate Colombia's 4x1000 financial transactions tax (GMF) on a transfer or withdrawal: the tax amount and the total actually debited.
How is it calculated?
GMF = amount × 0.4%. Colombia's Gravamen a los Movimientos Financieros, popularly known as "4x1000" because it equals $4 per every $1,000, is regulated in articles 870 to 881 of the Estatuto Tributario (Colombia's tax code). Law 2277 of 2022 kept the 0.4% rate without the gradual phase-out that earlier reforms had proposed. This calculator always answers "if this transaction is subject to GMF, how much would it be?" — it never decides whether a specific transaction is actually taxed, since that depends on real conditions (see below).
Examples
4x1000 on a $1,000,000 COP transfer
GMF of $4,000 COP; $1,004,000 COP debited in total.
4x1000 on a $500,000 COP withdrawal
GMF of $2,000 COP; $502,000 COP debited in total.
4x1000 on $10,000,000 COP
GMF of $40,000 COP; $10,040,000 COP debited in total.
What the Gravamen a los Movimientos Financieros (4x1000) is
The GMF is a 0.4% national tax charged on certain money movements in Colombia's financial system: cash withdrawals, transfers between accounts with different owners, checks and similar operations. It's collected directly by the bank at the moment of the transaction, deducted from the account balance.
It isn't filed separately: it's paid automatically, transaction by transaction, which is why many people don't notice it until they check their bank statement.
When 4x1000 is NOT charged
The best-known exemption is for a single savings account each person can mark as exempt, valid up to 350 UVT in monthly movements. Other specific exemptions also exist under article 879 of the Estatuto Tributario (for example, certain transfers between accounts of the same owner at the same bank, or interbank loans) that this calculator doesn't automatically cover — if you're unsure about a specific transaction, your bank can confirm whether an exemption applies.
