Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions and get the result already simplified (in lowest terms) along with its decimal equivalent.
How is it calculated?
Addition/subtraction: a common denominator is found (the product of both) and the numerators are combined — a/b + c/d = (a·d + c·b) / (b·d). Multiplication: numerators multiply together and denominators multiply together — a/b × c/d = (a·c) / (b·d). Division: multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction — a/b ÷ c/d = (a·d) / (b·c). The result is always simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
Examples
Add 1/2 and 1/3
1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6 (≈0.8333).
Multiply 2/3 by 3/4
2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2 (0.5).
Divide 3/4 by 1/2
3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/2 (1.5).
How fraction operations work
| Operation | Formula |
|---|---|
| Addition | a/b + c/d = (a·d + c·b) / (b·d) |
| Subtraction | a/b − c/d = (a·d − c·b) / (b·d) |
| Multiplication | a/b × c/d = (a·c) / (b·d) |
| Division | a/b ÷ c/d = (a·d) / (b·c) |
