Gas vs. Electric Car Cost Calculator

Compare how much it would cost you to drive the same distance with a gas/diesel car versus an electric one, purely in terms of energy cost.

How is it calculated?

Gas/diesel cost = (distance ÷ 100) × consumption (L/100km) × price per liter. Electric cost = (distance ÷ 100) × consumption (kWh/100km) × price per kWh. The savings is the difference between the two.

Examples

  • 100 km: 6 L/100km gas car at 1.65 per L vs. electric at 18 kWh/100km at 0.15 per kWh

Gas: 9.90. Electric: 2.70. You save 7.20 every 100 km.

  • 15,000 km a year: 7 L/100km at 1.60 per L vs. 17 kWh/100km at 0.18 per kWh

    Gas: 1,680. Electric: 459. You save 1,221 a year.

What this comparison doesn't include

This calculator compares the cost per km of fuel versus electricity, not the car's purchase price or its depreciation, which usually differ between an electric and a gas car. For the total cost of owning the car, depreciation included, use the real annual car cost calculator.
