How is it calculated?

Weighted average: multiply each grade by its weight, add those results up, and divide by the sum of the weights (if you don't give weights, a simple average is used). Grade needed on the final: grade needed = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final's weight)) ÷ final's weight, expressing the final's weight as a fraction (30% = 0.3).

Examples

  • Weighted average: grades 8, 6, 9 with weights 20%, 30%, and 50%

    Weighted average: 7.9.

  • Grade needed: you have a 6, the final is worth 40%, and you're aiming for a 7

You need an 8.5 on the final exam.
